Add Value to your networking connections

Kevin Willett speaks about the importance of adding value to your networking connections.

One of my LinkedIn contacts emails me networking articles a few times a month. His emails simply say “I saw this article and thought of you. Hope all is well.” He asks for nothing in return. This is a great way to add value to a relationship. He’s definitely building his “know, like, and trust factor.” If I need to hire or refer someone in his line of work, you can bet he’ll be at the top of my list. Think about ways you can add value to
your connections. It could be as simple as offering to introduce them to one of your contacts. I highly recommend this simple tip to help you grow your business.

Arrive on Time for Networking Events

Kevin Willett speaks about the importance of arriving on time for networking events.

The hardest part of hosting a networking event is the 15 minutes before the event begins. We hosts can get nervous thinking nobody’s going to show up. If you arrive about 10 minutes early, the host will appreciate it. For myself, having someone to talk with takes my mind off of wondering how many people will show up and whether a good time will be had by all. What is in it for you? First, you can often spend some quality time with the host. I can only speak for myself, but when I have 10 minutes to talk with someone before an event, I usually end up introducing them to a lot of people simply because their story is fresh on my mind. Second, it allows you more one-on-one time with other early arrivers. Also, the host often needs help with some last minute preparations, so being that helpful person will go a long way towards building your relationship with the host. I’d like to thank everyone who shows up early for my events. Thanks for keeping me calm and entertained.

Be where you are suppose to be

In today’s business networking tip Kevin Willett speaks about the importance of not skipping out on business networking events.

Like most people, I have a tendency to overbook my schedule and I am often tempted to cancel meetings. However, I have found that whenever I am tempted to cancel and I don’t, I am always happy that I attended.  These are usually the meetings where I  make a great business connection.

Think about this tip next time you are tempted to cancel an appointment or skip out on a networking event.

Why I wont hit you up

In today’s business networking tip Kevin Willett speaks about the importance of building relationships n social media.

Today I had a guy reach out to me to connect on social media. When I accepted his connection request he messaged me saying ” Brother hit me up if your need my services.” When I responded that I would like to Skype with him, to learn more about him, he said that he was way too busy for that but, “call him if I need anything”?

This response is wrong on many levels. Let’s focus on building relationships. Please understand that connecting with people on social media is just the beginning of the relationship. It’s like meeting someone at a networking event, we still have to work on building the relationship and getting the other person to know like and trust us. Please do not try to skip this step, it will hurt your networking efforts.

Are you being selfish with social media

In today’s business networking tip Kevin Willett speaks about the importance of not being selfish when it comes to social media.

On Friday’s, I encourage my followers to post their FB Fan Pages or Twitter handles on my wall, so that my friends can connect with them. What typically happens is that many people will take the time to post their information on my wall, but they won’t connect with any of the other people listed.

Control your emotions

In today’s business networking tip Kevin Willett speaks about the importance of controlling your emotions.

I was disappointed in myself today because I lost my temper with someone. I received a call today from someone who wanted me to help him with something that just just wasn’t a match for me. The more I tried to say no the more he pushed me and finally I snapped at him. My friends this is never acceptable.

Think about this with me for a minute, if my name comes up at a networking event he is going to tell everyone that I was a jerk to him and snapped at him on the phone. I think we can all agree that is not the image we want. So please remember to do your best to remain calm at all times.

It Only Takes One Connection

In today’s business networking tip Kevin Willett discusses  why you should not focus on the number of people attending a networking event

I had a friend message me asking how many people are attending our upcoming networking event. Instead of telling him the number I asked him if he would be happy if he made one great contact at the event? He responded that he would be so I chuckled and said that I guess it really didn’t matter how many people are attending because it only take one connection to make the event a success.

So next time you consider skipping an event because only a few people are registered remember it only take one connection to make the event a success.

Don’t speak badly about your competition

Kevin Willett discusses the importance of not speaking badly about your competition.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to bad mouth your competition. I know it can be disappointing when you lose a deal to someone that you feel is not as good as you but its never acceptable to bad mouth them or to make the person feel bad for choosing your competition. The only thing you can say is something like ” they are a great company and I am sure they will do a great job for you”
