You Look Great

Kevin Willett says that compliments can be awkward when you don’t know all the facts

Please be cautious about complementing people on their weight loss, not everyone is trying to lose weight.

I have a friend going through a horrible divorce and he has lost a ton of weight because he is heartbroken. People keep complimenting hi on his weight loss. He told me that he just wants to say ‘thanks for the complement on my weight loss, maybe my wife should have left me years ago’.

I have another friend who is sick, and he has lost a lot of weight because of the chemo treatments. When people comment he smiles and says, ‘the chemo is working out great’.

Do you see how awkward things can be simply because you are trying to complement someone? For some reason many of my friends are obsessed with weight and commenting on who has lost and gained weight. Please keep those comments to yourself unless you know for certain that the person is trying to lose weight, then of course you should congratulate them on their success.

You are NOT Lucky

Kevin Willett agrees that the harder you work, the “luckier” you get

I had coffee with a friend recently and she recapped her career for me. She kept saying “and then I got lucky and this happened”. Halfway through her story I started laughing and said, you did not get lucky you worked hard, and good things happened for you.

I always smile when people mention how lucky they are. I am not a big believer in luck. I believe good things happen to you because of your efforts. I was meeting with another friend one day and he mentioned how lucky he was because he met an amazing client at a networking event. Was it luck? I don’t think so. It happened because the guy went to the event. He put in the effort and earned it.

Occasionally I meet a potential client who decides to join another networking group. I don’t say the other group got lucky. I saw there was something about the other group that was a better match and the other group did a better job than me explaining the benefits of their membership.

As the saying goes, the harder you work the luckier you will get.
