May I Have Your Business Card?

Kevin Willett says not to dismiss those you think can’t help you.

Lately I have seen many people attend networking events without their business cards. I have had a few people say to me that they don’t bring cards anymore because they want to control who they give their cards to. They don’t want to waste time talking to people they don’t want to network with. I really think this strategy is a mistake because you never know where you next referral is coming from. If you refuse to give your contact information to someone, then how can they contact you? Please understand that networking is about building relationships and getting people to know like and trust us. Communication is the key to building relationships. I believe it is important to remember that you are selling through someone and not to them. Just because I don’t have a need for your services doesn’t mean that I may not meet someone who does. When you dismiss people you are missing out on a chance to build a relationship with them and potentially a chance to grow your business.

Do You Still Need Business Cards?

Kevin Willett says that business cards are not out of style in today’s online universe

Do you still need business cards? The short answer is yes, you do.

I am seeing many people request that you just connect with them on social media rather than exchanging business cards. The challenge with this idea is many people are simply not active on social media, so connecting with them will not help you build a relationship with them.

I am also seeing people use fancy business card apps to download people’s information into their phone. This is a cool idea; however, not everyone uses these types of apps. Even if you do use these apps, you still need to have business cards for them to take a picture of and then download.

I think that it is important to remember that some people still want your business card and you have to respect that. Be sure to carry some cards with you at all times, to make sure you are not missing out on potential business opportunities.

Do You Have a Business Card?

Kevin Willett says the condition of your business cards matters.

I found myself in an interesting position this weekend. I was at the grocery store and I ran into a friend who told me he was trying to get his friend to join my networking group. He asked me for a business card so he could have his friend contact me. Sadly, I had three cards in my jacket pocket and all of them were badly damaged. One actually had a piece of hard candy stuck to it! Luckily I had cards in the car so I was able to solve the problem.  Unfortunately, I see people pass out damaged cards all the time. Please think about the messages you may be sending. When I get a damaged card I think this person doesn’t pay attention to details and they are pretty frugal if they think it’s ok to pass out a business card that had a piece of hard candy stuck to it. Is that really the image that you want to provide?

Simple solution is to purchase a few business cards holders so that your cards always look good. Now please take a moment to look at the business cards in your wallet, pocket, purse or wherever and throw them away if they don’t look good.
